Police are investigating the "suspicious" death of a man found inside a locked vicarage in a small market town in South Gloucestershire.

The vicar of St Mary's in Thornbury, Reverend John Suddards has been named locally as the victim.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers remain at the scene at the vicarage where it was discovered by two workmen who had arrived for a pre-arranged appointment.

"When they could not gain entry they obtained a key, found the body and called the police."

Residents of the market town, about 11 miles north of Bristol, expressed shock at the discovery of the body.

Mitch Hoare, a manager at the Royal George pub, said: "It's quite a quiet little village - everybody knows everybody.

"The locals don't get things like this happening very often." Read More
